OLLEROS
Santo Domingo de los Olleros, o simplemente
Olleros es el nombre de un pequeño pueblo
ubicado en un lejano paraje de las altas
montañas de los Andes al sur-este de Lima.
Olleros se ha hecho conocido en el mundo del
Mountain Bike por el camino ancestral que
desciende desde 3,600m de altitud por las
montañas
y
valles secos de la vertiente occidental de
los Andes hasta el mar del Océano Pacífico.
Este camino ha sido utilizado por
siglos por
sucesivas generaciones de pastores
andinos nómades que lo recorren con sus
animales desde las alturas de Olleros en
busca de los pastos que abundan en las
tierras bajas de la costa durante los meses
de invierno gracias a la humedad de la
niebla que hace reverdecer las lomas cada
año.
Despúes del descubrimiento de esta ruta por
bikers aventureros rápidamente se convirtió
en el recorrido favorito de muchos mountain
bikers tanto peruanos como extranjeros hasta
el punto que ha éste ha sido considerado
como uno de los
mejores Downhill
Trails del Mundo.
Cientos y hasta miles de bikers lo han
recorrido ya. La ruta ya es bien conocida y
frecuentemente se organizan Bike tours para
hacer la ruta Mountain Bike de Olleros. Sin
embargo, hemos notado que todos los bikers
que hacemos uso de este camino pasamos
brevemente por el pueblo de Olleros, usamos
el camino ancestral que atraviesa las
tierras que son de la comunidad local y
seguimos de largo con nuestra vida sin
siquiera agradecer a la comunidad local por
permitirnos hacer uso de su camino ancestral
y disfrutar del bello y espectacular
paisaje.
Nosotros en Peru Cycling creemos que
los Tour Operadores como nosotros le debemos
gratitud a la comunidad de Olleros
porque su camino se ha convertido para
nosotros en un excelente producto que
ofrecemos y vendemos como Bike Tours
organizados a nuestros clientes mountain
bikers que disfrutan de esta experiencia MTB
única.
La lejana ubicación del pueblo de Olleros lo
hace inaccesible y lo mantiene aislado del
resto de la civilización, a él se llega
después de cinco horas de viaje en camioneta
4x4. Debido a su lejanía el pueblo
prácticamente ha sido abandonado por sus
pobladores que se han trasladado a
localidades ubicadas más abajo, más
accesibles y cercanas a la ciudad. Solamente
cinco familias viven en Olleros de manera
permanente.
En Olleros existe una escuela rural multi-nivel
que provee servicios de educación básica y
alimentación a unos 55 niños. La mayoría de
estos niños son muy pobres, hijos de
pastores y campesinos y van a la escuela de
Olleros provenientes de pequeños caseríos de
los alrededores, algunos de ellos ubicados
muy lejos del pueblo. Muchos de estos niños
van a la escuela caminando por las montañas
durante horas o en mulas.
Debido a esto muchos niños se quedan
en Olleros durante la semana y son
sostenidos por la escuela y regresan a sus
casas los viernes por la tarde.
Al enterarnos de esta realidad, en la visita
que hicimos en Septiembre 2014 al pueblo de
Olleros por el tour MTB que organizamos para
unos clientes decidimos iniciar un
Proyecto de Bike Tours con Compromiso Social
para Olleros.
Visitamos e inspeccionamos la escuela
de Olleros para conocer la verdadera
situación de la escuela y sus necesidades.
En nuestra visita conocimos al
Director de la escuela quien nos mostró la
escuela por dentro.
Primero visitamos la sala de computación
donde vimos la sala casi vacía y que
solamente tienen 3 computadoras que no están
funcionando y 3 muebles para las
computadoras.
También visitamos la cocina y el
comedor donde vimos que no tienen mesas ni
sillas para que los niños puedan sentarse a
comer los alimentos que la escuela les
provee. La cocina cuenta con los equipos y
utensilios necesarios para preparar los
alimentos. Los alimentos son preparados por
el grupo de madres de la comunidad.
Los niños comen sentados en sus
carpetas en el salón de clases.
También visitamos la sala de la
biblioteca donde vimos que no tienen libros,
ni estantes, ni sillas, ni mesas para
lectura.
Después de esta primera visita recibimos la
primera donación
hecha por
Jamie Wilkins una de nuestros clientes que
visitaron Olleros en ese tour. Jamie donó
U$300, con esta suma compramos 3 juegos de
mesas y sillas para el comedor de la escuela
de Olleros.
Dos semanas después hicimos un nuevo bike
tour a Olleros para Travis Clater lo que
ayudó a
llevar la donación de Jamie.
Aún falta ayuda para la escuela de
Olleros:
Para el comedor faltan cinco juegos de mesas
y sillas -U$100 cada juego.
Para la biblioteca faltan libros, estantes,
mesas y sillas.
Para la sala de computadoras faltan
computadoras, software y las instalaciones
necesarias para que funcionen las que tienen

OLLEROS
Santo Domingo de los Olleros or simply Olleros is the
name of a little town remotely located on
the high mountain tops of the Andes
South-east from Lima.
Olleros has become famous in the MTB world thanks to
the ancient trail that descends from 3,600m
altitude through the mountains and dry
valleys of the western slopes of the Andes
down to the sea of the Pacific Ocean.
This trail has been in use for
centuries by successive generations of
nomadic shepherds walking along it together
with their livestock from the heights of
Olleros searching for pasture that is
abundant on the lowlands of the coast during
the winter months thanks to the humidity
from the fog that makes greening the coastal
hills each year.
After the discovery of this route by adventure bikers,
it quickly became to be the favorite trail
of many mountain bikers either locals and
foreigners up to the point that it is now
considered as
one of the best
downhill trails on Earth.
Hundreds and even thousands of mountain bikers has done
the Olleros trail already. The route now is
quite well known and bike tours to Olleros
are organized very often. However, we have
noticed that all bikers doing this route
just pass briefly through the town, use the
ancient trail passing across the lands that
belong to the local community and go away
without any appreciation to the local
community for allow us to use their ancient
trail and enjoy the beautiful and amazing
landscape.
We, at Peru Cycling believe that Bike Tours
Operators like us owe gratitude to the
Olleros community because their
trail has become for us and excellent
product offered and sold as organized bike
tours to our mountain biking customers that
enjoy this unique MTB experience.
The remote location of Olleros town makes it not easy
accessible and keeps it isolated from the
rest of civilization, Olleros is reached
after five hours drive on a 4WD vehicle. Due
its remoteness the town has been almost
abandoned by its inhabitants that have moved
to lower locations, more accessible and
closer to the city. Just some five families
live in Olleros on a permanent basis.
In Olleros exists a rural multi-level school that
provides education and support to some 55
children. Most of these children are very
poor, sons of shepherds and peasants and
come to the Olleros school from little
surrounding villages and some from very
remote sites. Many of these children come to
the school walking for hours through the
mountains or riding on mules. Because this,
some of them stay in Olleros during the week
and are supported by the school and they go
back home on Fridays afternoons.
As we learned of this sad reality, on the visit we did
to the town in September 2014 during the
Olleros bike tour organized for our
customers we decided to start a
Bike
Tours with Social Commitment Project for
Olleros. We visited and surveyed
the Olleros school to know the true
situation of the school and what the needs
are. On this visit we met the school’s
Director who showed us the school from
inside.
First we visited the computers room where we saw the
room almost empty just three computers –not
working and computer desks. We also visited
the kitchen and the dining room where we saw
they have not tables and chairs for the
children to eat the meals the school
provides them. The kitchen counts with the
equipment and utensils needed to prepare the
meals. The meals are prepared by the local
community mothers group. At present the
children have their meals sitting on their
desks in the classroom.
We also visited the library where we
saw they have not books, shelves for the
books, chairs and tables for reading.
After this first visit the
first donation
was received from Jamie Wilkins
(USA) one of our kind customers doing the
Olleros Bike tour, she donated U$300, with
this sum three sets of tables and chairs
were purchased for the dining room of the
Olleros school.
Two weeks after we did another Olleros bike tour paid
by Travis Clater (USA), on this trip the
Jamie’s donation reached Olleros
Help is still needed for Olleros school:
The dining room needs five sets of tables and chairs
–some U$100 per set.
The library needs books, shelves, tables and chairs
The computers room needs computers, software and
installation to put working the ones they
have.
